On February 16, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held strategic consultation with Don Pramudwinai in Chiang Mai. Both sides exchanged in-depth views on the South China Sea issue.

Speaking positively of the current situation in the South China Sea which is getting stable, the two sides expressed that the momentum of strengthening dialogue, managing divergences and deepening cooperation among various parties is being continuously enhanced. Both sides stressed that relevant countries should continue solving disputes through friendly consultation and negotiation in peaceful ways. As signatories of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, China and countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will work together to safeguard the freedom of navigation in and the over-flight above the South China Sea in accordance with the law, so as to maintain the peace and stability in the South China Sea.

The Thai side highly appreciated the Chinese side’s proposal to complete negotiations on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea within three years, and emphasized that Thailand is willing to take this as a goal and join hands with other ASEAN countries to actively speed up the consultations to work out the regional rules which conform to the reality of the region and are abided by all parties at an early date, in a bid to benefit the region and the international community.
